When two numbers share a field — and the Bank walks in

Open Ghana and scroll to the economy block. You will see more than one living number for the same idea. The headline real GDP per capita is $8,020. The dated 2024 estimate is $7,100 (in 2021 dollars), up from $6,800 in 2023 and $6,700 in 2022. None of these is a typing error. They are different cuts of the same field family, stored so a ranking sort and a time series can both exist.
If two respectable sources disagree, we do not silently overwrite the edition-backed figure. We keep it, date it, and explain the gap.

The $8,020 headline row is a separate compiled figure (rank 136 for real GDP per capita). Use it for a snapshot; use the 2022–2024 trio when you need a direction of travel.
When the Bank walks in
World Bank and UN series often land on a different year, a different dollar year, or a different population denominator. A classroom move that always works:
- Write the Factbook number with edition and field date.
- Write the Bank (or UN) number with series code and year.
- Say, in one sentence, why they are allowed to differ — vintage, PPP vs market, mid-year vs January 1.
Population is the cleanest drill. Ghana in this edition: 35,336,133 (2025 est.), men 17,278,776 and women 18,057,357, world rank 44. The World profile sits at 8,057,236,243 (2024 est.). Those two years are printed on purpose. Do not “update” Ghana to a 2024 Bank total and leave the World line on 2024 without saying you mixed books.
How our rankings are built
The 2025 edition holds 5,626 ranking rows — population, area, both GDP flavours, fertility, CO₂, and the rest of the rankings page. A rank is not a moral score. It is a sort of one numeric column after we have parsed value_numeric from the text. If the text cannot be parsed, the country simply does not appear in that table. That is why some lists are 195 long and Population is much longer: more editions and more entities made it through the parser.
