Editorial Policy

Last updated: September 12, 2026

World Factbook combines structured reference data with clearly labeled editorial content. This policy explains how those layers differ.

Reference data

Country fields, rankings, and edition-backed figures are compiled from documented datasets and archives. They are maintained for consistency and historical comparison and may lag real-world changes.

Editorial overlays

Optional editorial summaries on country and region pages are written by authorized editors or administrators. They are meant to add context and orientation; they do not replace citation of primary sources for contested facts.

News, blog & newsletters

Three labeled channels, each with a different job:

They are published through the Editor Portal by authorized roles. Unless explicitly stated, they are not intelligence assessments or government reporting.

Corrections

We welcome error reports via Contact or relevant discussion channels. Material factual corrections to editorial pieces may be updated in place when feasible.

Independence

Editors are expected to avoid undisclosed conflicts of interest in commentary and to clearly separate opinion from dataset-derived facts.
